Kimono-Style Robes: How to Wear the Trend with Confidence

Wide sleeves, a wrapped front and a defined waist — kimono-style robes are easy to wear once you know three simple styling rules.

The kimono-style silhouette — a wrapped front, wide sleeves and a long, flowing line — has become a favourite because it is dramatic and comfortable at the same time. The shape does a lot of the work for you; styling is mostly about balance.

1. Balance the volume

Wide sleeves and a long hem already bring plenty of volume. Underneath, choose something fitted and plain — a slim top and straight trousers, or a simple slip dress — so the robe stays the star.

2. Use the belt to define the waist

A tied belt gives the long line a shape. A darker belt against a light, printed robe adds contrast and draws the eye to the waist. Worn open and unbelted, the same piece becomes a long, relaxed layer.

3. Let one element lead

  • Bold print: keep shoes, bag and jewellery neutral.
  • Solid colour: add one accent in the accessories.
  • Warm tones such as rust, apricot and sand look especially good against darker backgrounds and evening light.

Where to wear it

Belted and paired with heels, a kimono-style robe suits dinners and festive gatherings. Open over a plain outfit with flat sandals, it works for daytime outings. Choose a flowing fabric for movement, and keep the length in mind when you sit or climb stairs.
