A lehenga is made for celebrations — a flared skirt, a fitted choli and a dupatta that frames the whole look. Because it is worn for hours and photographed often, it is worth choosing with care. Use this guide to narrow down your options.

The three parts

  • Lehenga (skirt) – the flared bottom, usually with a drawstring or hook waist.
  • Choli (blouse) – a fitted top; the cut and sleeves set the style.
  • Dupatta – draped over one or both shoulders or over the head.

1. Pick a silhouette

  • A-line – a gentle flare that flatters most people and is easy to walk in.
  • Flared / circular – dramatic volume that swirls beautifully for dancing and photos.
  • Mermaid / fishtail – fitted through the hips, flaring lower down, for a sleek look.
  • Straight – a slimmer line, comfortable for long events.

2. Choose the colour for the occasion

Deep jewel tones and rich reds suit weddings, while pastels and soft metallics are popular for receptions and daytime events. If you want to wear it again, pick a colour you can restyle with a different dupatta or blouse.

3. Check the fit

The waist should sit comfortably without digging in, and the hem should clear the floor in the heels you plan to wear. A choli can usually be adjusted by a tailor, so leave time for alterations before the event.

4. Mind the weight

Heavy embroidery looks stunning but can be tiring over several hours. Check how heavy the skirt is, whether it has a soft lining, and whether you can move, sit and dance comfortably.

5. Plan the dupatta and accessories

A richly worked lehenga pairs well with a lighter dupatta and simple jewellery; a plainer lehenga can take a heavier dupatta and bolder accessories.

Storage

Store the lehenga in a breathable garment bag, either hung by the waist loops or folded with soft tissue between the layers, and dry-clean embroidered pieces.
